Communication is becoming increasingly prevalent in today’s video game society.  At one point in time, the internet was not widely popular, and video games were entirely offline experiences, so communication between players was not possible within the game.  Players did, however, still have the opportunity to converse with friends at school or work and share their adventures and discoveries.  With the onset of the internet, however, online games came about that allowed players to interact with each other in-game and have the opportunity to work together to successfully complete a task, but even now, offline games are still a relevant part of communication between video game players.

Introduction

Serving as my primary source, the book Ready Player One by Ernest Cline explores:

  • Communication within a virtual environment

  • Collaboration with other players to accomplish a task

  • The uses of offline games and their specialized vocabulary to communicate with others and understand references

  • How external and internal modifications, such as interface add-ons and microphones, can help to improve the experience altogether

I found it did not accurately portray the negatives of this, however, such as a gaming community complaining about updates or features.  While negative, this does offer some positives, however, and can help the developers of a game.
